Shari B. writes – Hey Chuck when are you going to address the hatred and racism being spewed at Caitlin Clark by the certain media announcers, Sheryl Swoopes, and select WNBA players (the majority of players, regardless of color have welcomed the new focus from the increased viewership and attendance). It has become obvious that Clark has caused the white viewer to tune in and also buy tickets. This has given the few racist/jealous players exposure also, so what’s up?
Shari you should write the article on: Swoopes Racist Behavior?
To provide a brief summary of the situation, here’s a concise overview of the negative comments Sheryl Swoopes has made about Caitlin Clark.
Sheryl Swoopes, a WNBA legend, has made several controversial comments about Caitlin Clark, a rising star in women’s basketball, who just snatched away all of Cheryl’s WNBA records. These remarks have sparked significant backlash from fans and the basketball community.
Constant Criticism: Swoopes has repeatedly criticized Clark’s play and reactions to instigated attacks from a small number of players (most WNBA players are professionals and not racist). These attacks can be construed as based on race or jealousy. Especially any interaction with Angel Reese, a player who tries to set records at the expense of her teammates and team. Clark also receives no help from referees, to make matters worse the “Poor Officiating” (or atrocious if scrutinized) makes one wonder if it is a coordinated effort. That is something that should be investigated.
Questioning Clark’s Dominance: Swoopes has repeatedly questioned whether Clark’s performance in the WNBA can be considered dominant. Despite Clark’s impressive statistics, including 19.5 points, 8.4 assists, and 5.7 rebounds per game, Swoopes stated that these numbers are not indicative of dominance.
Incorrect Information: During an appearance on “Gil’s Arena,” Swoopes incorrectly claimed that Clark broke Kelsey Plum’s NCAA scoring record by playing an additional season. In reality, Clark achieved the record in the same amount of time as Plum.
Comments on Clark’s Transition to the WNBA: Swoopes expressed skepticism about Clark’s ability to transition seamlessly from college basketball to the WNBA. She stated that Clark would not be able to dominate immediately upon entering the league.
Walking Back Comments: After facing backlash, Swoopes attempted to walk back some of her comments. She admitted to making a mistake regarding the number of seasons Clark played and reached out to Clark to apologize. This is a step in the right direction. Credit Swoopes for correcting the narrative. Now lets see if the unwarranted criticism continues (it does).
These comments have led to a polarized response from fans, with many defending Clark’s achievements and criticizing Swoopes for her remarks. Despite the controversy, Clark continues to excel and making history in women’s basketball. Though recently sidelined by a quad injury, her absence once again demonstrates the absolute “Golden Girl” she is to the league. In her absence, attendance and viewership is notably down.
Not only has she handled Swoopes with class but she has dominated the other attitudes and dirty play by a handful of players who appear insanely jealous of her success and only wish to tear her down or injure her to their own detriment. Imagine the WNBA without Clark? Get it? It would still be a 2nd hand shadow league. There is so much info out there confirming these statements and we hope the league will step up. After all Clark’s success is beneficial to all the WNBA, she does not deserve preferential treatment but she does deserve an honest chance and fair play.
Yes, sadly racism does exist for ALL races, however, Black Racism is alive and well but never discussed. If I may be so bold, I hate all forms of racism. I understand prejudice will always exist but racism should not, yes we were created equal in the image of God. Having said that, it is unfortunate to discern that Swoopes hates Clark because she is white (we cannot get into the mind of Swoopes, so we can only infer racism as a possible answer and cause from comments and actions). Yet in the minds of many black Americans racism is a “white only” disease. It’s ironic though that the very thing a minority of black Americans harp on and card they play is also the same thing that they themselves are intrinsically guilty of harboring and acting upon. Unfortunately for those who are truly just Americans and not racist in the least, they can often be painted in the same light as those who discredit their race. So many examples from all colors of the racial spectrum. If you need more detailed information or have any other questions, feel free to ask!
